The need to do art and share is a gift from our cave-dweller ancestors who started painting pictures on their walls centuries ago. Home decor dates back to ancient Egyptians furnishing their mud homes, the Romans painting marble ceilings and medieval Europe with its period of sombre colours.
Here we are in an era where style is more individual than ever, and lifestyles shift very quickly. Especially in these difficult times when we have to spend more time, be it working or relaxing. Home decor is essential to create an aesthetic space just for yourself. Somewhere you can actually call home.
We thought we could help with some tips on what home decor items can do you some good this year.
- Play with geometry
Geometry helps create bright and modern interiors, balance and harmonize rooms and add an interesting, fresh touch to home decorating. Geometric shapes are one of the most aesthetically pleasing designs. There are many shapes in various combinations which can be used to create beautifully intricate patterns.
Use this floating wall rack to fill the spaces above your TV or simply on an empty wall to make full use of your vertical space.
2. Use murals to make your space come alive.
“A fine work of art — music, dance, painting, story — has the power to silence the chatter in the mind and lift us to another place.”― Robert McKee
Hanging paintings or murals can liven any place while adding elegant sophistication. Hang your art by its centre and preferably in symmetry with the wall.
3. Less is more
Start decorating your space with the “less is more” mentality. Especially if you are not settled in your permanent home, avoid cluttering. Buy a few essentials such as sofas and kitchenware and fill in as you go.
4. Organize and organize!
For the messy homemaker, make use of organizers to keep track of your things. Not only do they make spaces look tidier, but they also add some style when in sync with the background tone. Use this gold-toned organizer against a sombre marble wall.
5. Thank god for the wallpaper.
No worries if your new home has dirty walls or holes you don't want anyone seeing. Choose a wallpaper of your choice and decorate around that accent.
6. The right lighting
Appropriate lighting without any glares and shadows can do wonders for your home. Natural light can heighten your home features. Make use of natural lighting by using beige or white curtains and open windows. Hanging light fixtures are a great way to spruce up the ambience. Bedside lamps can add glamour to your bedroom and provide you with the right atmosphere to read or sleep peacefully.
This can be another way to create your own light. If you are given a dark space, you can use bright and warm paint tones to brighten the area.
7. Invest in antiques
Antiques are not that hard to find. Just drop by your grandparent's house and scout for unwanted furniture. Most antiques are thrown away because of a simple chip, but the tip is to renovate it as your own.
8. Paint anything and everything
Anything can look reborn once you paint it. If you still doubt about your cream coloured walls or your brown dusty bedside table, paint in a new vibrant colour to set the mood.
9. All-in-white
White can be rather difficult to take care of, but it pays off because it looks so worth it.
10. Mirrors
Mirrors are a great way to amplify any features in a surrounding. It can immediately make your environment look bigger through the illusion of depth. Use mirrors as a focal point and decorate around them.
11. Bathroom care
Most people say the bathroom is the most important part of any home. It holds true because you want your bathroom to look organized and pleasing.
12. Adopt some plants
Another great tip to livening up your place is to become a plant parent. There are many plants out there that can survive on little to no water, such as aloe and snake plant. House plants can complement your decors even more by simply placing them in the right corner.
