One man’s style must not be the rule of another’s. - Jane Austen

Like everything else, menswear was shaped by the culture and tradition around people. We continue to look into the foundation of individuality all around the world. Style is, above all else, personal.

For instance, in western culture, an era from the 1800s to the 1900s was dictated by long frock coats, waistcoats and top hats. Whereas in Bhutan, the national dress (Gho) has remained an imperative measure to preserve the sovereignty of the nation. Therefore, we find ourselves at a unique standpoint where comfort wear is being prioritised.

However, conformity is not something that was born anew with the new generation. The “Age of conformity” began in the 1950s where men tried to look fit and employable. This meant ready to wear fabrics and loafers.

Now we are at a point in time where style is very individual and within the control of the people. We have come a long way from formal black ties and cravats to California streetwear and Japan’s futuristic sense. So we thought we could help you with what to wear and how to wear it.

1. Loosen up, please!

We cannot be the only ones who were glad when slim fitted jeans went out of style to replace relaxed clothing. A great sense of relief for both fashion and testicles around the globe. Au revoir to an era of seeing things we do not want to see. Our favourite are these denim jeans with the oversized cotton hoodie.

2. Look for proportions

The key is to create a clean silhouette from head to toe. Do not contrast with your clothing but rather only with the colours. If you are wearing slim fit trouser, then whatever is on your upper body should compliment the same.

3. Keep it casual

Nothing beats a casual look dressed with a good jacket and shoes.

4. Outdoor friendly

Take it back to 2019 when wearing athletic gear for no reason made to the top of the list. Consider this an easier trend as well because your north face windbreaker is probably going to hold up better than a wool coat. The obvious choices where outdoor gear is concerned would be a standard windbreaker, a long sleeve and some mountain-friendly footwear.

5. Military wear

Rising to its popuplarity during WWII, military-style is made up of beige hues, structured coats and masculine combat prints. It has been changed to fit the everyday stylish Joe.

6. Standard knitwear

Contrasting and layering are the most important attributes of clothing. Knitwears are a great way to add some class to the overall look. This style is a staple for modern menswear and serves as some timeless additions to your wardrobe.

Tricks

  1. Realize that dressing well is a skill: Dressing and knowing what looks good on you is a skill that can be practised and learned.
  2. There is an occasion for everything: Everything has a time and place. Dressing well does not mean you have to wear suits everywhere you go. Set aside your black ties for formal events and whip out your sweatshirts for comfort wear.
  3. Get the right fit: No one is blocking you from not tailoring your clothes. Having the right fit of clothes for your body can help you look the part.
  4. Grooming: Taking care of your facial hair, hair and skin are essential parts to fitting in and feeling comfortable in the clothes you wear.
  5. Surround yourself with inspiration: Although the style is individual, it does not hurt to have some inspiration. Derive confidence from maestros such as Harry Style, Frank Ocean and ASAP Rocky.
  6. Invest in staple pieces: Before you dip your toes into what is trendy, be sure to check if you have basic staples such as a plain white tee, jeans and a coat complementary to most outfits.
